Youth Risk Behavior Survey Presentation for High School

Good Morning,

The links below are to three documents related to the RMHS Youth Risk Behavior Survey.  The first link is the presentation that RCASA Executive Director Erica McNamara made to the School Committee on October 19th.  The second and third documents are dashboard documents that compare the current results with past RMHS, state, and national results.

Over the next few months, the RMHS staff will be analyzing the data with RCASA to see what areas in our programs and policies need to be strengthened.  The middle school YRBS results will be presented to the School Committee on November 23rd.

If you have any questions, please contact RCASA Executive Director Erica McNamara at emcnamara@ci.reading.ma.us.

Arrangements for Retired Teacher John McCarthy

Below is the obituary for John McCarthy from the Graham Funeral Home in Woburn.

John F. McCarthy, Jr., a beloved educator for over 41 years, passed away after a long illness on Monday, October 19.  He was 64 years of age.

Raised in Medford, he was the son of the late John F. McCarthy, Sr., and the late Ruth (McConnell) McCarthy.  John graduated from St. Francis of Assisi Elementary School and Austin Preparatory School in Reading.  He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Merrimack College.

Immediately after graduating from Merrimack College, John returned to Austin Preparatory School to begin his teaching career.  John expanded his teaching credentials at several universities.  He taught in the Science Department at Austin Prep for 20 years.  John then transferred to the Arthur W. Coolidge Middle School in Reading, where he taught science for 21 years before retiring in 2014.

During his career, John became very active with the National Science Olympiad competition volunteering his time for over 22 years.  He led numerous teams of students to earn multiple awards.  John also chaperoned student trips to France; taught drivers education and mentored students privately.  John was known for his insect collections and wide variety of pets including piranhas, a turtle named “Sully”, and several Doberman Pincer dogs that lived with him at the home he built in Wilmington.

“Mr. McCarthy” was loved by his students and colleagues.  He was known for his trademark sayings; “Migrate!,” To bad, so sad!,” and “Don’t imitate a vestigial organ!”  Even after retiring, he returned often to check in on his students and to organize Science Olympiad Day, one of his favorite annual events at Coolidge Middle School.  His humor and teaching will be missed by all who knew him.

John is survived by one sister Mary Frances McCarthy McGurn and her husband Michael Shawn McGurn of Medford; and two brothers, Gerard Mark McCarthy and his wife Debra Ann McCarthy of Charlotte, NC, and David B. McCarthy and former sister in law, Sandra McCarthy of NH.  He is also survived by four nieces and nephews, Ruth McCarthy, Debbie McCarthy DuBreuil, Shannon McCarthy, and Patrick McCarthy.  John is further survived by many family members and close friends.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Dorothy’s Church, 120 Main St. (Route 38), Wilmington, on Saturday, October 24 at 10:00 am.  Burial will follow at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Medford.  There are no calling hours.  Contributions in John’s memory may be made to the Coolidge School Science Olympiad 89 Birch Meadow Drive, Reading MA 01867.  Arrangements by the Graham Funeral Home, Woburn.

Sad News

Good Morning, Reading Public School Families,
It is with great sadness that I share with you that recently retired Coolidge Middle School Teacher, John McCarthy, passed away yesterday afternoon following his courageous battle with cancer.  John was a Science Teacher and Science Olympiad Team Coach at Coolidge Middle School for over 20 years and touched the lives of hundreds of children as well as numbers of colleagues, both at Coolidge and also in his early years as an educator at Austin Prep.  Especially for those of you whose older children might have known or had John at Coolidge, and surely for those on the Science Olympiad Team, you know what an amazing spirit he had and how passionately he shared his love of science and teaching with all of his students, the parents, and staff.

We do not know the service arrangements at this time and we will provide more information once it becomes available.

Although this is a sad time for all of,us John’s strong spirit and inspiration will be with us forever.  Please keep him and his family in your thoughts and prayers.  Also, please keep the Coolidge staff and Coolidge and High School students, as well as alumni in your thoughts as they have just lost a colleague, a mentor, a friend, and a teacher.

Teen Panel Discussion About Social Media and Resources

Teen Panel 3

Last Thursday, a group of selected High School Students participated in a panel discussion where they shared their digital lives with parents across the district.  Over 75 parents attended this outstanding session.  This was a great opportunity for parents of students of all ages to learn firsthand what to expect and how to support their children throughout the coming years.  Special thanks to our technology integration specialists, Marcia Grant, Kathy Santilli, Meg Powers, and Janet Dee, and our teen panelists for their thoughtful and candid comments.

Teen Panel 4

The presentation that occurred last Thursday is the kickoff to a year long focus by our technology integration specialists to work with a Common Sense Education program called Connecting Families. Common Sense is the nation’s leading independent non-profit organization dedicated to empowering kids to thrive in a world of media and technology. We feel it is important for parents to be aware of what’s going on and/or what’s to come in their children’s digital lives and to help support them in discussing how to make good digital choices.  This program is well designed with lots of support from Common Sense Education and has been successful in many districts.

Teen Panel 2

The program will continue throughout the year with a series of Conversation Cases for small groups of parents with topics such as Cyberbullying, Digital Footprints and Photo Sharing, and many more relevant topics.

Listed below are several links that will be useful as parent resources on this important topic.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s building principal or technology integration specialist.

Community Forum Presentations

Over the last few weeks, the Reading Public Schools has made presentations on the results and findings from last Spring’s Community Forums and other connected data.  The purpose of these presentations have been to report out to the parent community and staff the data from a variety of sources that give a picture of our school district.  This data and the findings from the data help us understand the strengths and areas to strengthen in our school district.  Our schools and the district will be using this data for our school and district improvement plans, as well as prepare for the FY17 budget.  It will also help us answer the questions, What do we want our schools to look like in the next two years and beyond?

The presentations have focused on the feedback and data from the following sources:

  • Community Forums (May/June)
    • 4 Forums (Barrows, Birch Meadow, Coolidge, RMHS)
      • 110 Participants
      • Barrows-15
      • Birch Meadow-23
      • Coolidge-30
      • RMHS-42

      • 9 Forums (Each school, including RISE Preschool)
      • 215 participants
  • Walker Associates Special Education Report (March-June)
  • RPS Student Survey (Administered in February/March)
  • RPS Staff Survey (Administered in January)
  • 2015 MCAS Data
  • Staff Exit Interview Information
  • Some YRBS Data (Full Presentation on October 19th)

The complete presentation is attached below.  Over the next several weeks, we will hold additional presentations to staff and the community to keep all stakeholders informed of our direction as a school district.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask a question on this blog or email/call the Reading Public Schools Administration Offices.
